Panel examines macho man leaders at winter magazine launch

Our magazine launch party was held on Wednesday evening at Google HQ in London. Our panel discussed the ways macho male leaders around the world stifle dissent, debate and democracy, and the success stories of those who speak out against them.

Thanks in particular to Saudi journalist and documentary maker Safa Al Ahmad, joint winner of the 2015 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Award for Journalism, who was able to step in for Lindsey Hilsum who was sent on assignment to Baghdad.

Khadija Ismayilova's travel ban must be lifted

Index, together with Reporters Without Borders UK and Transparency International UK, called on the government of Azerbaijan to lift the travel ban on award-winning investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova.

Ismayilova needs to travel to the UK to give evidence in the trial of Paul Radu, a Romanian journalist who is co-founder and executive director of investigative reporting group OCCRP (the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project), who is being sued for defamation in London by Azerbaijani MP Javanshir Feyziyev.

Report on silenced journalists in Turkey in 2019

Charge, attack, restrict is the name of our latest update from our Monitoring and Advocating for Media Freedom project. The report highlights the wide-ranging and ill-defined laws that were used to target independent journalists. More than 120 journalists remained in prison in Turkey during 2019.
