In the past few days, Texas Republicans have filed a slate of bills in the Texas Legislature that would bar tens of thousands of lawful immigrants and refugees -- on the path to becoming US citizens -- from being able to purchase property in Texas due to their national origin.
It’s especially appalling when you consider that Texas has the 4th-highest rate of AAPI hate-related incidents in the country.
So now, after an unprecedented rise in anti-Asian hate around the nation, our Asian communities in Texas continue to struggle against not only violence but with political persecution as well.
These Republican bills aren’t just discriminatory and hateful -- they bring back painful reminders of laws passed a hundred years ago that specifically prevented Chinese individuals from owning property, starting businesses, or even marrying the person they love.
As a proud immigrant myself, I will always stand up for immigrants who continue to make Texas a diverse, unique, and welcoming state.
