As I mentioned in my recent email, IJ hit the ground running in 2023, with case launches, trials, court appearances, and more. Today I share even more good news: We scored a sweeping victory <[link removed]> in our challenge to the California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau’s monopoly on end-of-life care.

IJ clients Akhila Murphy and Donna Peizer run the nonprofit “Full Circle of Living and Dying” in Sacramento, California. They provide emotional and practical support to families navigating the end-of-life process with a loved one. But more expensive funeral service providers didn’t appreciate the perceived competition. So, the Bureau tried to shut Full Circle down in 2019, claiming they were running a funeral establishment without a state-issued funeral home license.

Akhila and Donna had two choices: close their doors or fight back. Together with IJ—and supporters like you—they stood up for their right to care for those approaching their last days.

And today, the court ruled in their favor, stating that the state’s restrictions violate Akhila and Donna’s right to pursue a lawful calling along with running afoul of First Amendment protections.

Full Circle can now continue to carry out their labor of love: providing compassion and guidance to the dying and their families.

IJ is proud to support those who fight back against unreasonable government demands, and we are prepared to build on this momentum through the coming weeks and months. Please join us <[link removed]> as we zealously pursue justice for our clients, like Akhila and Donna, and for all Americans.
