Friends,
After the four-day, fifteen-voting-round spectacle to elect Kevin McCarthy Speaker of the House, Congress should have hit the ground running with action to address kitchen table issues.
But rather than take a productive approach to legislating, Republicans have spent their time introducing performative bills aimed at satisfying the ultra-rich and ultra-extreme.
The first act in their razor-thin majority was passing a bill that would prevent the IRS from cracking down on wealthy tax cheats and increase the deficit by $114 billion over the next 10 years. And their attempts to weaken women’s rights have only just begun.
This disregard for bread-and-butter issues will not be ignored by our Democratically held Senate and administration.
House Republicans will have to work with Democrats to get anything done, but if the last few weeks have taught us nothing it’s that the next two years will be an uphill battle.
But this is no time to panic, Friend, and certainly no time to give up. With determination, empathy, and collaboration, we can continue to push for progress and work to build a better future that creates opportunity and is equitable for all.
