Hi,

Exxon knew about the climate crisis in the 1970s, but that didn’t stop the oil giant from continuing its fossil fuel production.1 Exxon’s predictions about warming temperatures were “remarkably accurate.”2 Despite having this knowledge, Exxon kept on drilling for oil AND publicly cast doubt on climate science for years.3

Big Oil has been spending money to protect its profits for decades. But we have the opportunity to come together now to stop the fossil fuel industry before there’s no turning back. A big step in the right direction would be President Biden declaring a climate emergency in America, which would allow President Biden to stop oil and gas drilling and invest heavily in renewable energy.

Sign the petition: Tell President Biden to declare a climate emergency to fight Big Oil and help stem the tide of climate change!

With Republicans in control of the House, the need for executive action is greater than ever. And the need for Democrats to fight corporate greed, especially in the fossil fuel industry, is urgent.

Democrats achieved the U.S.’s largest ever investment in combating climate change by passing The Inflation Reduction Act. But the White House knows this is just a step, it’s not sufficient to hit Biden’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030.4

Declaring a national emergency will empower President Biden to stop oil and gas drilling and invest heavily in renewable energy—essential actions for the US to do its part to back off the cliff of extreme weather events, like the recent major storm and flooding in California, that are devastating communities and claiming lives. Once Biden declares a national climate emergency, he'll be able to invoke the National Emergencies Act to halt crude oil exports, limit oil and gas drilling in federal waters, and direct federal agencies to boost renewable energy sources.5

Sign the petition: President Biden must declare a national climate emergency immediately and clear the way for big policies to take on the climate crisis.

Thanks for taking action,

Tihi and the team at Demand Progress
