Instead of pumping oil and gas out of the earth, instead they should be required to pump carbon dioxide back in.
John,
When you make a mess, you clean it up. That’s how it’s supposed to go. But when it comes to the fossil fuel industry, the rules don’t apply.
For decades, big oil and gas companies have gotten away with causing irreparable harm to the environment without having to pay for the costs of dealing with the consequences.
To rectify this, one proposal that has been tossed around in scientific and policy circles is to require these oil and gas companies to do the reverse of what they’ve done for decades. Instead of pumping oil and gas out of the earth, instead they should be required to pump carbon dioxide back in.
Advancements in technology to capture and store CO2 underground now present an opportunity to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for its destruction.
According to Myles Allen, a professor of geosystems science at the University of Oxford, “the technology exists – what has always been lacking is effective policy.”
So, John, we want to know what you think. Now that the technology is feasible, do you think that fossil fuel companies should be required to pay for CO2 to be stored underground to offset the pollution they cause in the atmosphere?
