Until the collapse of crypto exchange FTX, crypto enjoyed a halo of legitimacy as a reputable area of innovative finance, despite being almost pure speculation, attracting scams and Ponzi schemes, and facilitating money laundering and unlawful activity. As rivers of crypto money flowed into Washington, the industry gained political influence on both sides of the aisle. However, a handful of progressive policymakers, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, warned of the dangers of these highly speculative and volatile instruments, while Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler took an aggressive approach to ensuring they did not pose a risk to the broader financial system.
