Friend,

Let's be honest about what 9-5 really means:

"9-5 job" no longer really means 9-5 -- it can be 7-7, or 8-6, or even longer. Most salaried employees are working well over a traditional 40-hour week, and between childcare and bills piling up at home, it can be impossible to keep up.

It's yet another way big companies are squeezing the middle class. And it's wrong. So here in Washington state, we're doing something about it. IT'S HARD TO OVERSTATE HOW IMPORTANT THIS NEW POLICY IS -- NOT JUST FOR WASHINGTON FAMILIES BUT AS A PROGRESSIVE MODEL FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

It's time we put middle-class families before giant corporations. So I directed the Department of Labor & Industries to update Washington's overtime rules. Hourly employees have long been entitled to overtime -- but salaried workers have generally been entitled to it only if they make less than a certain amount: About $23,660 under federal law, or more where state laws are more generous.

At my direction, Washington state now has the country's strongest overtime rules. By 2028, salaried workers earning up to $83,356 will be entitled to time-and-a-half overtime pay. This is an incredible step to support hundreds of thousands of salaried workers and a crucial step toward rebuilding the middle class.

But that's just here in Washington state -- I firmly believe the rest of the country's salaried employees deserve these same protections. I'm calling on all 2020 candidates to take a stand to protect workers' rights by embracing these same overtime rules in their campaigns: Add your name to join me. ([link removed])

Salaried Americans work an average of 49 hours per week -- that adds up to about one extra day every week, and 11.7 additional weeks per year. Increasing overtime rules assures that workers are getting compensated for that time -- and that helps us rebuild the middle class.

Lawmakers have been hesitant to update overtime rules to match with current working conditions and office culture, which for so many Americans is early mornings and late nights -- with no additional pay. By some estimates, as few as 7% of salaried workers are entitled to overtime. We have changed that in Washington state, and presidential candidates should commit to do the same nationally.

This is about rebuilding our middle class, and if we don't start now, we'll keep falling behind. Americans deserve the same protections we have here in Washington, wherever they live -- I hope all the 2020 presidential candidates agree.

I'm calling on all the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to take up Washington's overtime rules in their campaigns to rebuild our middle class -- if you want to see them make a commitment to salaried employees in every state, add your name right now. ([link removed])

Very truly yours,

Jay
