John, earlier today I joined MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss the heartbreaking mass shootings perpetrated in the past several days — and to answer a question I’ve heard so many times before.
“What can be done?”
We know what can be done. We’ve known for years. There are common sense gun safety solutions that the majority of Americans already agree on. Universal background checks. Gun safety locks. A ban on assault weapons. Gun licensing.
If you’re as outraged as I am by the Republican Party’s political cowardice, and their refusal to do their Constitutional duty and protect our nation from gun violence, add your name to my petition demanding we take action today:
The problem we have in America is that we have a major political party that is not willing to do the common sense things that would make us safer.
They are content and complicit in a status quo that makes this nation unique among industrialized countries that don’t have this regular routine horror. That don’t live in a reality where their children have more active shooter drills than fire drills.
A reality where you give a hug goodbye to a family member going to a concert, going to church, going to a classroom, and have in the back of your mind this horror and this worry.
It’s not a matter of getting on the same page to do something about it. It’s a matter of Republican leadership that lacks the will.
More people in America have died in my lifetime from gun violence than in every single one of our wars — from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and wars in the Middle East — combined.
It is a dereliction of duty.
It is a surrender to violence.
It is a refusal to do their Constitutional duty to defend this nation.
Add your name to my petition demanding that Congressional Republicans come to the table and work with us to pass common sense gun safety legislation and stop these horrific acts of violence — or face the electoral consequences.
Thanks for speaking up.
With love and gratitude,
Cory
