John, almost fifty years ago, Roe v. Wade solidified a person's right to have total control over their bodies and medical decisions.
And after crowds of people marched near our office celebrating the end of Roe this weekend, it only brought more resolve for the fights ahead to secure abortion rights nationwide.
Because when I think about Roe, I think about my mother, who crossed the Rio Grande while pregnant with me. I think about my nieces, scared of the idea that they might grow up without that right.
But most of all, I think about the millions of lives that will be affected if we continue to put life-or-death medical decisions in the hands of extremist Republicans instead of medical professionals.
John, as the first Latina from the Midwest to be elected to Congress, I feel a personal responsibility to fight for reproductive rights, not only for people in my home, or in my district, but for people across the country.
And this isn't the first time I've battled for reproductive rights. In my time in the IL House, I:
1️⃣ Supported legislation to repeal the Parental Notice of Abortion Act, removing one of the final barriers to reproductive rights in our state.
2️⃣ Co-sponsored the Reproductive Health Act, enshrining the right to choose into Illinois law.
3️⃣ Was endorsed by Emily's List and PODER PAC, two organizations committed to supporting pro-choice women candidates.
And this is exactly the type of mindset I'm bringing to Congress. But just like in the Illinois House, codifying our right to choose is going to take partners on every level – from people in our neighborhoods to people in our capitals.
