John, this can’t be legal.
The New York Times reported that the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) is paying influencers to promote fossil fuel use and discourage clean energy sources like heat pumps. This isn’t small potatoes, John; PERC is planning to spend $13 million on this anti-clean energy campaign this year!
PERC isn’t just some random pro-propane group with a fancy name. It is a federally authorized trade association that is required under the Propane Education and Research Act of 1996 to only spend its marketing budget on research, education, training, and safety activities.
We don’t know about you, John, but spending money on HGTV hosts to spread pro-propane propaganda without disclosing who is paying the tab doesn’t sound like the sort of “marketing” the authors of that law had in mind. This anti-sustainability campaign has the potential to impact both the climate AND consumers’ wallets if they successfully persuade their audience away from cost-effective clean energy sources.
That’s why SEEC Vice Chair Chellie Pingree isn’t standing for it. She’s calling on the Department of Energy and the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether PERC violated federal law with this misleading, undisclosed paid promotion from fossil fuel companies.
Rep. Pingree is holding bad actors like PERC and fossil fuel companies accountable for their misdeeds. It’s SEEC Members like Rep. Pingree who are leading the charge to defend our environment in Congress. Rush a contribution today to support them in the fight to end our fossil fuel dependency! [[link removed]]
