Indivisibles,

Last Wednesday, we dug through the chaotic mess of the House’s first week
in session to bring you a list of the extreme legislation, committee
assignments, and rules changes MAGA Republicans managed to push through in
just four days.

Despite Congress being in recess through this morning, there’s already new
mayhem to report:

* Republicans assigned 9/11 truther and insurrection-enthusiast Marjorie
Taylor Greene to the Homeland Security Committee.

* They unveiled new members of the Oversight Committee, a slate nearly
entirely made up of election deniers, including Marjorie Taylor
Greene, Scott Perry (who is a subject of January 6th investigations),
Andy Biggs, Lauren Boebert, and Paul Gosar. (Gosar had been removed
from committees last year for targeting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
in a violent, threatening social media post.)

* And they announced a new bill that would abolish the IRS, eliminate
the income tax and replace it with a 30% national sales tax that would
massively raise taxes for working families while lowering the tax
burden for their ultra-rich donors.

All of this, and we’re not even done with January yet. Republicans have
made it clear they intend to sow chaos and inflict as much harm as they
can over the next two years. But fortunately, we don’t have to wait until
next November to fight back.

Right now, in target districts and communities across the country,
Indivisible groups are taking grassroots action to mitigate the harm these
Republicans can inflict and lay the groundwork for retaking the House next
November. All of that work is made possible by supporters like you.

Subject: 4 Days of MAGA mayhem

Indivisibles,

Welp, the first week of the new Republican House majority is officially in
the books.

Because of a historically chaotic Speaker battle (which nearly devolved
into a literal battle on the House floor), Republicans have only had four
actual working days in D.C. since being sworn in. But in that short time,
they’ve managed to cram through a shocking amount of nefarious rule
changes and harmful pieces of legislation.

There have been so many corrupt maneuvers and concessions to MAGA
extremists already that some of it has gotten by without much notice. But
don’t worry -- we’re keeping track.

Below is a quick summary of what happened last week. [ [link removed] ]If it enrages you
as much as it’s enraged us, please chip in so we can get to work retaking
the House and restoring a Democratic trifecta that will actually govern in
the public’s interest.

* In one of their first policy moves, Republicans passed a bill that
would cut funding for the IRS, making it easier for their ultra-rich
donors to cheat on their taxes.
* The House passed two anti-abortion bills that lay the groundwork for
MAGA Republicans’ ultimate goal -- a national abortion ban without
exceptions.
* Republicans selected most of their committee chairs. Over 50% of them
voted to overturn the 2020 election. Fewer than 20% are women. In
fact, there will be more men named ‘Mike’ than women running House
committees this term.
* They’ve also created a new committee on the “weaponization of the
federal government” which MAGA Republicans will use to amplify
conspiracy theories and interfere with ongoing investigations into the
efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
* Keeping with their efforts to limit transparency and avoid
accountability, Republicans voted to hamstring the Office of
Congressional Ethics and its ability to investigate fraudsters like
George Santos and members who refused to comply with January 6th
committee subpoenas.
* Tucked into the rules package was a provision that tries to ban
congressional staffers from unionizing. Last term saw the first
efforts to form unions in House offices and, of course, Republicans
will try to undermine the rights of workers wherever they can. (Case
in point: They also just removed the word ‘labor’ from the name of the
Committee on Education and Labor).

And there’s still more to come. In order to become Speaker, Kevin McCarthy
made a number of secret agreements with the most extreme members of his
caucus. We don’t know all the details -- but it’s clear he’s now all in on
the MAGA plan to hold the entire global economy hostage in an impending
fight over the debt ceiling (more on this soon).

Through all of this chaos, it’s important to remember there are 18 House
Republicans representing areas that President Biden won in 2020, and every
single one of them voted for these bills and rules that could not have
passed without their support. These 18 Republicans had the chance to stand
up for their constituents and the public good; instead they chose to toe
the party line and serve the interests of their wealthy donors.

Seeing the damage Republicans can do in just one week, we know there’s a
long two years ahead of us. As we mentioned in our new guide, we’ll be
using this time to highlight Republicans’ extremism, and we’re honing in
on the 18 most vulnerable Republicans in the House who are enabling the
MAGA agenda. This work is only possible thanks to the support of our
grassroots donors. [ [link removed] ]If you’re able to, click here to make a contribution

When it’s time to face the voters, these 18 Republicans will run, deflect,
distract, or just outright lie because they know the votes they took are
deeply unpopular. It’s our job to make sure they can’t run away from their
own record.
