[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Gamesmanship over paying America’s bills is so irresponsible. We pay the country’s debts. Period. Stop.

If Republicans force America to default on the debt, it would be a global economic catastrophe. For the time being, since Republicans are refusing to raise the debt limit, the Treasury is taking extraordinary measures to prevent default. But it’s time for the games to stop.

We need to urgently put pressure on Republicans to join Democrats and raise the debt ceiling.

Will you add your name to tell Congress to raise the debt ceiling? There is no negotiating on this issue. There is no reward for doing your job to make sure the economy doesn’t shut down.

Even Donald Trump, a corrupt president who is notorious for not paying his own bills, didn’t play games with paying America’s bills. But Republicans — led by the radical House GOP caucus — are refusing to govern.

Democrats have passed massive bipartisan legislation over the past two years. We’ve shown we’re willing to negotiate on policy. But the question of whether or not we default on American debt is not something to negotiate over.

It’s important to remember that Republicans have voted for every single budget Congress has passed. Frankly, they fought to defend the filibuster to make sure that all annual spending HAS to be bipartisan. They supported this spending AND on top of it, they gave a massive tax cut to the ultra-wealthy and corporations that added over a trillion dollars to the debt.

That’s a stark contrast to the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act. We made massive investments in climate infrastructure, jobs and more while simultaneously reducing America’s borrowing — not adding to the debt.

Republicans supported the policies that created the need to raise the debt ceiling. And now they aren’t willing to pay the bills they created.

Tell Congress to take urgent action to raise the debt ceiling and prevent an economic catastrophe. We need to put as much pressure as we can on Republicans to do their jobs and govern.

If the price of McCarthy becoming speaker is a default on American credit, that will be 100% on Republicans. Once it becomes acceptable to threaten to burn down the entire economy unless you get your partisan agenda enacted, it’s all over.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
