The world we'll leave to our children and grandchildren
We’re delighted to announce that Elizabeth (“Liddy”) Stein—Happy’s New York counsel and a lawyer who’s been with us since the very early days—is taking on a new role at the NhRP! Liddy (pictured above speaking alongside NhRP attorney Monica Miller) is now our Litigation Director, which, broadly speaking, means she’ll be working with the NhRP’s founder and president, Steven M. Wise, to set the legal strategy around our ongoing and future cases. This includes determining where we’ll file new lawsuits, engaging in a meticulous review process with the lawyers arguing and writing briefs for these cases, and overseeing how we’re adapting to what judges are saying and doing.
This coming December will mark ten years since we filed the world’s first lawsuits demanding a legal right for a nonhuman animal. Now that we’re a mere decade into a battle against centuries of nonhuman animals’ rightlessness, the work Liddy will focus on is especially important. Why? Because the NhRP’s unique mix of rigor, persistence, and flexibility is how we’re going to continue to break down the thick legal wall that unjustly separates nonhuman animals , encouraging more and more judges to say loudly and clearly, as they’ve begun to do [[link removed]] , that we humans aren’t the only beings entitled to basic legal rights.
As Liddy said at a 2022 rally to #FreeHappy from the Bronx Zoo, “For me personally, and I imagine for many of you, Happy’s case is as much about the impoverished life Happy has been made to endure as it is the world we’ll leave to our children and grandchildren … Isn’t it our duty to teach our children and grandchildren that the world must be defined by respect for freedom and dignity, no matter who you are?”
We look forward to sharing more in the year ahead about our reflections on the last decade and the legal fights to come.
Thank you as always!
Lauren Choplin
