In this first issue of Recently from CLASP in 2020—and at the start of a new decade—Olivia Golden steps back to review how CLASP engaged throughout the 2010s to make important strides on such issues as ARRA, the ACA, Medicaid, and immigrant families. She also looks ahead to the 2020s and the important role that CLASP will play in helping continue the fight for economic and racial justice among people with low incomes, communities of color, and immigrants.

Impact of $550 Million CCDBG Funding Increase for States

In the final FY2020 Appropriations Bill, Congress increased by $550 million its investment in CCDBG. However, it will continue to reach only a small fraction of eligible children—and Latinx and Asian American families are especially likely to be underserved.

Update on “Public Charge”

Over the past 2 years, the Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) Campaign has fought back against the Department of Homeland Security’s “public charge” rule. Earlier this month, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals denied the government’s attempt to lift the remaining nationwide injunction preventing the rule’s implementation. A few days later the Trump Administration appealed directly to the Supreme Court. The legal fight continues, but for now, the longstanding public charge policy governing decisions made by immigration officials inside the U.S. remains in place. For people affected by this proposal, every day the rule continues to be blocked counts as a major victory.
