Earlier this month, democratic institutions in Brazil were attacked by supporters of former President Jair Bolsanaro. Brazil has experienced a decline in its overall rule of law score for the past five years ([link removed]) , just like the United States had before the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Rule of law in the United States began to rebound in 2022, but will it continue? Will rule of law in Brazil start to improve in 2023?

As 2023 gets underway, rising authoritarianism continues to be a concern, as judicial independence in countries such as Hungary and Poland remains under threat and leaders in Asia Pacific use disinformation laws to silence dissent.

The 2022 WJP Rule of Law Index ([link removed]) revealed that access to civil justice, fundamental rights, and constraints on government powers were all particularly vulnerable. More than 4.4 billion people live in countries where the rule of law weakened last year, according to WJP data.

Here are five rule of law issues to watch in 2023:

* Rise of disinformation laws in Asia Pacific
* Strengthening rule of law in India
* Accountability in Latin America
* Rebuilding trust in the United States
