Here in Alaska, we don’t get to debate whether the science behind climate change is real. We don’t get to talk about 2040, 2050, or some time far into the future when the effects of climate change will change our way of life. For folks that live in places like Shishmaref, Alaska, climate change is real, and it impacts the way residents live every day.

Alaska’s land and waters are warming at twice the rate as the rest of the world, and melting permafrost and mass erosion are forcing communities like Shishmaref to relocate.

This year at AFN, I was inspired to see young people leading the charge in the fight against climate change. They want to continue and protect the traditions that have been passed down for generations. It’s time we listen to them and take action now.

I’m running for Congress because Alaska needs new leadership. I’m tired of Washington politicians like my opponent denying science and playing partisan politics while our communities and way of life are threatened.
