Dear friend,

The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is proposing changes to the operation of the Inmate Financial Responsibility Program (IFRP). The proposed rule would automatically put 75% of money sent from family members to people in prison towards restitution, court costs, child support, or other obligations — no matter the amount, and no matter how much these individuals have in their accounts.

We agree the old IFRP system is outdated and prone to misuse, but believe that the BOP proposal is too broad. If your loved one has court-ordered financial obligations that have not been met, and you send them $100, only $25 will be deposited in their account. That's a lot of money to take away from people who need it!

Because this is only a proposed rule, you have the opportunity to weigh in and shape the BOP’s final policy. The comment period is now open for 60 days. We’ve created a template with some additional background information and instructions you can use to let the BOP know how this proposed rule would impact you and your loved one.
