Play like a pro and have a game plan for betting responsibly on the Super Bowl, advises Michigan Gaming Control Board

Detroit, January 24, 2023 ? Play like a pro and have a game plan for betting responsibly on this year?s Super Bowl. The Michigan Gaming Control Board urges Michigan residents to develop personal guidelines for whether, when and how much to gamble on the big game or whenever they visit a casino or sportsbook in person or online.

?Gambling should be entertainment, and it?s important to set limits before you place any wagers on the Super Bowl or any other sporting event,? said Henry Williams, Michigan Gaming Control Board executive director. ?Establish amount and time limits to help ensure you can have fun without gambling more than you can afford to lose.?

The International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) offers responsible gaming tips for Super Bowl or any time of the year:

  • Personal choice: Don?t allow yourself to feel pressured to gamble for social acceptance.
  • Not essential for fun with friends: Don?t view gambling as necessary for having fun and being with friends.
  • Preset loss limits: Only gamble what you can afford to lose and know when to stop.
  • Don?t borrow money: It?s a risky plan to borrow money from a friend, relative or other source you can?t afford to pay back unless you win.
  • Don?t chase losses: You can?t guarantee you?ll regain previous losses through more gambling.
  • Avoid gambling in high-risk situations: If you are lonely, angry, depressed, under stress, coping with the death of a loved one, in recovery for addictions, trying to impress others or seeking to solve personal or family problems, you should avoid gambling.
  • Avoid risky combinations: Excessive alcohol use can affect judgment and lead to impulsive gambling.

If you are gambling online, you may set limits on the gaming platform for deposits, wagers and the time spent on every site authorized in Michigan. The self-imposed gambling limits can be changed only with 24 hours? notice.

The gaming platforms and the MGCB offer gambling self-exclusion options. You may visit the responsible gaming or help section of an authorized individual operator?s or provider?s website for self-exclusion information. The MGCB also offers self-exclusion from all legal, regulated sites through the Responsible Gaming Database for online gaming or the Disassociated Persons List for the Detroit casinos.

The ICRG estimates 2-3% of U.S. adults have a gambling problem and 1% of the population has been diagnosed with a gambling disorder. If you suspect you, a friend or a loved one has a gambling problem, you can take this quiz on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website and get help by calling the Michigan Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-270-7117.

Unlicensed sites can put patrons at risk for identify theft, deposit losses or unpaid winnings.

If you plan to bet on the Super Bowl or other sporting events, check the MGCB website for a list of licensed internet sports betting providers and sports wagering catalog for information on legal leagues and bets.

Gambling in any form is for entertainment purposes only. If someone has a gambling problem, please call the state's 24-hour, toll-free helpline at 1-800-270-7117 or the MGCB's responsible gaming section at 1-888-223-3044. You also may visit the MGCB website at https://www.michigan.gov/mgcb/resources/responsible-gaming for information on self-exclusion programs including the Disassociated Persons List and the Internet Gaming and Sports Betting Responsible Gaming Database.
