We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Kim Scudera. Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected].
Congratulations to Kim for correctly identifying these Eastern Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) tracks. According to the National Wildlife Federation blog, squirrels have an incredible sense of smell. They can find buried food under a foot of snow! Squirrels are smart too. Squirrels have been observed engaging in “deceptive caching.” This is where a squirrel digs a hole and vigorously covers it up again, but without depositing the nut. It seems this is done to throw off potential food thieves - such as other squirrels.
