The Tufted Puffin’s bright orange beak, long golden plumes, and black and white mask have earned them the name "clown of the sea." But the threats facing these stocky seabirds are no joke: Rising ocean temperatures mean they are increasingly struggling to find the food they need to survive. From October 2016 through January 2017, a mass die-off struck thousands of birds. And these once-rare mortality events are now happening with increasing frequency.

In this code-red crisis, birds urgently need all the help they can get. Audubon will do our utmost to protect them—but we can’t do it without you. Will you commit to their protection with a monthly gift today? We’re counting on 29 bird lovers to join together right away to unlock a special $10,000 gift from a group of generous donors.

If seabirds are in trouble, so are we:
Seabird numbers are in steep decline worldwide, down 70% since 1950.
Research shows that most North American birds are threatened with increasing risk of extinction from climate change.
We’ve lost 3 billion birds in the span of a human lifetime.

In 1973, National Audubon Society started Project Puffin, now known as Audubon’s Seabird Institute, in an effort to learn how to restore puffins to historic nesting islands in the Gulf of Maine. Today, thousands of Atlantic Puffins—and many other seabird species—nest on several islands off the coast of Maine every year. With the support of bird lovers like you, we continue this important work providing research data, seabird restoration best practices, and more to other seabird researchers around the world.

We couldn’t protect birds without people like you—people who care about them and are ready to help. And right now, birds need you more than ever. Please, be the friend they need today: We’re counting on 29 dedicated supporters to join us with a monthly donation right away while every gift will help unlock $10,000 more to protect birds like the Tufted Puffin.

Sincerely,

National Audubon Society
