John,
Over the holidays, we saw what can happen when surveillance tech is deployed at an event venue. Kelly Conlon, a mom chaperoning her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, was barred from attending a Rockettes show after guards scanned her with facial recognition. She did nothing wrong. She’s just on a list of people Madison Square Garden doesn’t like.1
This is bad, and it’s just one example of how facial recognition could be used to infringe on peoples’ rights. This technology puts music fans, sports fans, and others at risk of being unjustly detained, harassed, judged, or even deported.
Biometric surveillance should never be used on fans, and we’re demanding lawmakers put a stop to it. Can you sign the petition now?
Take Action
I’m a musician myself and I’ve organized tons of events over the years. Using biometric surveillance on crowds is a betrayal of fans’ trust, plain and simple. We can’t count on venues to protect this sensitive data from hackers. We can’t stop them from sharing it with the police. And it’s scary to think about the many other ways this tech could be used to stalk and harass people.
This technology isn’t safe, and venues have shown over and over again that they can’t be trusted with it.2,3 Demand lawmakers step up and ban this discriminatory tech at venues, arenas, and all public places.
Thanks for your support—
