*Governor Kelly Visits YWCA to Share How
“Axing Your Taxes” Plan Will Benefit
Kansas Women and Children

*TOPEKA* – Today, Governor Laura Kelly visited the YWCA in Topeka to share how her “Axing Your Taxes” plan will benefit Kansas women and children, by immediately eliminating the state’s sales tax on groceries, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. The “Axing Your Taxes” plan also creates an annual sales tax holiday for school supplies, and cuts to taxes on social security for retirees.

“By eliminating the sales tax on food, feminine hygiene products, and diapers – costs that disproportionately impact Kansas women – we’re putting money back in Kansans’ pockets and easing a financial burden too many of our families face,” *said Governor Laura Kelly.* “Eliminating those taxes in addition to providing Kansas parents with a tax holiday on school supplies will alleviate some of the stress facing parents and educators every August.”

YWCA has provided essential services to Kansas’ women, children, and families for over 130 years. Governor Kelly, a former YWCA member, was joined by YWCA CEO Kathleen Marker and Director of Community Engagement Allison Marker, as well as David Jordan, President of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, to discuss the “Axing Your Taxes” plan.

“YWCA whole-heartedly supports Governor Kelly’s plans to axe the tax on food, diapers, and period products – once and for all. It’s time to put money back in the pockets of Kansas women and families with no further delay, because no Kansan should have to choose between buying basic necessities or paying their bills,” *said YWCA CEO Kathleen Marker.* “YWCA has been answering the greater Topeka community’s call for safety, support, healing and empowerment for 135 years. It is time that our state legislature does the same. It’s time to fully Axe the Tax on food and basic necessities."

“Bringing down costs for Kansas families, especially amid higher costs driven by inflation, should be a top priority. Luckily for Kansans, Governor Kelly recognized that priority and has worked to address our concerns quickly with her ‘Axing Your Taxes’ plan,” *said David Jordan, President of United Methodist Health Ministry Fund*. “Governor Kelly’s plan will be game-changing for Kansas’ women and children, making great strides in addressing food insecurity for our families across the state.”
