ACLU Supporter – As soon as 2023 state legislative sessions started, politicians began introducing anti-LGBTQ bills across the country. Over 150 bills to be exact – the majority targeting trans youth. Utah's SB 16 is one of these discriminatory bills. If passed, the bill would block medically necessary gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Elected officials rushed SB 16 through the state's Senate last week, and this week – as early as tomorrow – they will try to jam it through the House and make it into law, which could have national implications for trans kids in other states.
ACLU Supporter, lawmakers listened to tearful Utah parents begging them not to cut off care and support for their child. They chose to ignore these families and move SB 16 through anyway. On the heels of the Roe v. Wade anniversary – we cannot forget that this attack on healthcare for trans youth is part of a larger set of attacks on our own bodies and lives. These are unified attacks, but we're unified in our convictions, too: Trans kids deserve to live authentically and freely with dignity – and ALL of us have the right to make the decisions we know to be right for our own families and our own needs. And, ACLU Supporter, that should never be up for debate. Allowing this bill to pass won't just hurt trans youth in Utah, it could encourage more harmful bills like it across the country. We cannot allow this to happen without a fight. Turn your rage into action: Tell Utah's politicians to stop SB 16 here and now. Thanks for your activism, Arli Christian |
