John,
Late last week, I joined with my fellow Democrats and a
few courageous Republicans in voting for a major policy victory:
the passage of the War Powers Resolution.
When our founders penned the Constitution, they ensured
that the people’s representatives in Congress — not the President
alone — held the keys to authorizing costly wars and military
force. By engaging in military force against Iran without
consulting Congress, the President has put us at the edge of war
outside the Constitutional process.
While a president is empowered to act when there is an
imminent threat, credible evidence of such a threat never
materialized. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he did not see
intelligence suggesting a threat. For this and other reasons, I
cast my vote for this important resolution. The most important
part of my job is to keep all Georgians and Americans safe, and
our nation will be safer when we honor our constitutional
guardrails to prevent unnecessary conflict.
Now that the War Powers Resolution has passed the House
of Representatives, the Senate is considering a comparable
resolution sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine.
Unlike the House resolution, however, the Senate
resolution will be subject to a presidential veto. That’s why we
need a groundswell of energy from everyday Americans to convince
their elected representatives to do the right thing and hold
Trump accountable by passing this resolution. Even amidst all the
breaking news on impeachment and the 2020 elections, will you
commit to staying up-to-date on the war powers discussion,
John?

YES, I COMMIT

You can look up your Senators here

, and give them a call or email to tell them this issue is
important to you. If we want to hold President Trump’s war powers
in check, it’s going to take all of us working together, but I
know we can do it.
Thank you,
Hank
P.S. Focusing on all these pressing foreign policy issues
hasn’t left much time for campaigning for 2020. If you support my
progressive agenda, I would be extremely grateful for a
contribution to my re-election. You can contribute to my campaign
