John,

Yesterday so many of us woke up to the news of another tragic and
senseless shooting. Just twenty one days into 2023, this was our country’s
twenty third mass shooting. It’s unacceptable that Congress has not done
more to prevent gun violence.

On Sunday I went to Monterey Park, and alongside other officials I prayed
for the lives lost.

But I am acutely aware that we need more than thoughts and prayers.
Following the shooting in Uvalde last year, Congress passed bipartisan gun
violence prevention measures. We’ve always known that would not be enough.
We need to firmly stand up to gun manufacturers and the Republicans who
are beholden to them and demand change.

My thoughts are with Asian American communities across the country. I hope
the Lunar New Year brings safety to all, and gives Congress the courage to
do more.
