Friend,
Brooke was recently sworn in as Comptroller, but a question we still hear often is, “What is a Comptroller?”
Maryland has three independently-elected statewide officials: the Governor, the Attorney General, and the Comptroller.
Simply put, the Comptroller is the elected CFO for the State of Maryland and manages the state’s money by collecting taxes and disbursing payments to contractors or individuals owed money by the state.
The Comptroller also sits on the state’s most critical administrative boards, including the Board of Public Works, the Board of Revenue Estimates, and the Board of Trustees of the State Retirement and Pension System.
In addition, the Comptroller has a unique opportunity to advocate on income-based issues. Did you know that the Comptroller can implement policies that ensure world-class public schools for every student, support older adults and protect our pension system, combat climate change by the way we invest our state dollars, and provide financial literacy and tax preparation support for individuals and small businesses?
There is enormous potential for Brooke to be a national leader on finances, closing the racial wealth divide, and combatting climate change.
Much more goes into the Comptroller’s job, but we wanted to give you an overview of the most important parts! If you’d like to stay updated with Brooke’s work, follow her on social media!
