The One-Minute Meeting

Exxon predicted decades ago that fossil fuels were contributing to inevitable climate change and then downplayed the predictions, a new research project says. Dozens of cities and counties have already sued oil and gas companies to help pay for climate change mitigation. Exxon says it never lied to the public.

Today is the first day of the U.S. tax filing season and this year, the IRS warns, most Americans will see smaller refunds. Pandemic-era deductions have run their course. This year’s average refund will be about $2,700, compared to $3,200 last year. I will explain what changed so you can prepare yourself for the effect on your bank account.

The Federal Trade Commission asked the public for input on whether it should ban noncompete contracts. 4,600 comments poured in and are still coming, from doctors, veterinarians, hair stylists and chefs, who explain that noncompete contracts keep wages low because they keep workers from going across the street to the competitor who is willing to pay more.

A new study shows us how important the workplace is to our lives, beyond providing employment. The new Edelman Trust Barometer ([link removed]) says, “As today’s societal issues continue to mount, employees now see their workplace as a safe space for debate and turn to it as a primary source of community — before their neighbors and religious organizations.” It may give you pause as workers and workplaces decide whether to keep working remotely.
