John, today was supposed to be a celebration of women’s
reproductive freedom. One 50 years in the making.

Instead, Republicans executed their decades-long plan to overturn Roe v.
Wade last year, with the help of a right-wing Supreme Court stacked with
Trump nominees.

Senate Democrats had a responsibility to the American people to abolish
the filibuster and protect abortion rights when Democrats had the House
majority. Two of them refused (and this week at Davos, you might have even
seen them high-fiving about it).

The filibuster remains intact. Legislation to codify Roe v. Wade and
expand the Supreme Court has stalled. Kevin McCarthy and the Republicans
are passing extreme anti-choice legislation in the House.

When the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade in 1973 — in a decisive 7-2
majority opinion — it ended restrictions on basic reproductive health care
and permitted women to obtain abortions legally.

Now, the Republican Party has engineered a right-wing judiciary and
Supreme Court after decades of careful planning, and last year one of
their state bans in Mississippi — argued in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s
Health Organization — accomplished what anti-choice extremists had so long
hoped. The reversal of Roe and more than a dozen trigger bans in
conservative states across the country.

Your ability to safely access reproductive health care or obtain an
abortion shouldn’t depend on which state you live in. We need Congress to
take action.
