John:
Today, we should be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision. Instead, we’re mourning it.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe was dehumanizing and dangerous. It does not reflect the will of the majority of Americans who deeply value maintaining control over their own bodies.
Here’s the truth: We all know and love someone who has had an abortion – regardless of your political affiliation, religion, occupation, race, or zip code. Those who have had abortions are not nameless, faceless people. They are our friends, neighbors, partners, colleagues, and family members. They are us – and deserve the dignity, respect, and rights that the Roe decision provided all of us 50 years ago today.
Republicans will try to ban abortion nationwide. That is their goal. But hear this: Justice Alito does not get the last word about our bodily autonomy. Extreme Republicans will not be allowed to take away our reproductive freedom. My Democratic colleagues and I will not stop until reproductive rights are restored as the law of the land. And with the vast majority of Americans standing behind us, we will not lose.
Thank you for standing with me in the fight for reproductive freedom.
Yours,
Becca Balint
