This is class warfare, and we're going to stand up and fight
back!
--Bernie Sanders
Comrades,
Bernie can win this thing. But he doesn't have the mainstream media
or the wealthy donor class on his side. He needs us to win.
Correction: We need us to win. This isn't about getting one man
elected. It's about sending a diverse working-class movement to the
White House, and then using that victory to inspire even more action
from below. A Bernie presidency will empower us to organize and fight
harder — but first we have to make that presidency a reality.
East Bay DSA's Bernie campaign is on fire right now. Do you want to
canvass in Oakland, San Leandro, or Berkeley? You can do all of those
today. Over the weekend we'll have canvasses all around the East Bay,
but we're focusing our efforts especially on Hayward.
Join us as we pound the pavement and talk to ordinary people about
Bernie's transformational platform, the need for political revolution,
the meaning of democratic socialism, and the stakes of this election.
There are also phonebanking opportunities if canvassing isn't your
thing, and organizer training sessions to expand your skillset. See
below for how to join in.
Oh, and don't miss Socialist Night School session "Bernie vs. the
Capitalist State" on Tuesday, 7 p.m. at East Bay Community Space.
We'll be discussing the class character of the state, and why our only
hope at substantive and lasting change is to build a politically
engaged, class-conscious mass movement of millions of ordinary working
people.

** SOCIALIST NIGHT SCHOOL: BERNIE VS. THE CAPITALIST
STATE
------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday,
January 21 | 7–9 p.m.
East Bay Community Space, 507 55th St,
Oakland ♿️
Bernie Sanders has a real shot at becoming the country's
first-ever democratic socialist president, opening up an incredibly
exciting opportunity for the Left. But as history has shown, left-wing
governments in liberal capitalist countries face a number of daunting
obstacles to enacting change.
What sort of challenges and opportunities would a Bernie Sanders
administration face? How might opponents inside and outside of
government resist Bernie's agenda? Tackling these questions requires
answering broader questions about the state's relation to society:
What is the state, and how does the capitalist state function? What
role does the state have to play in a transition to socialism?
Join East Bay DSA's Socialist Night School on Tuesday, January 21
to discuss these questions, in the second of a special four-part
series on Bernie Sanders, capitalism, and democratic socialism.
Readings coming soon!
Accessibility: Wheelchair-accessible entrance and restrooms.

** WEEKLY BERNIE PHONEBANK & DATA ENTRY
PARTY
------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday,
January 22 | 6–8 p.m.
EBDSA Office, 3832 Market St, Oakland
From
January through the California primaries, East Bay DSA for Bernie will
be making calls to get out the vote for Bernie and recruit to events,
entering data from canvasses and textbanking to build a democratic
socialist movement for Bernie Sanders. Come out and pitch in to help
create a movement!
No experience necessary—making calls is easy, and we will train you
before you start. This is a great event for anyone brand new to
political events or campaigns, if you've never knocked doors before,
or if you're a seasoned organizer! Snacks will be provided, child care
provided upon request. Bring your phone and a laptop or tablet if you
have one to make calls or enter data.
Street parking is available.

** THE ORGANIZER'S TOOLBOX: ONE-ON-ONE ORGANIZING
MEETINGS
------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday,
January 23 | 7–9 p.m.
Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library, 6501
Telegraph Ave, Oakland ♿️
Do you want to understand how to move
that not-yet-member at night school to action? Did somebody new show
up to your committee meeting and you're not sure how best to engage
with them? Did you meet a person while you were canvassing who's fired
up about Bernie but hasn't gotten involved in politics before?
In this training, we will discuss and practice the art of the
one-on-one meeting. This is a powerful and foundational skill for any
organizer—it helps us form a political relationship with somebody,
understand more about who they are and what motivates them, and gives
us an opportunity to make a concrete ask of them.
One-on-one meetings can help us develop political relationships
with other working class people, build leadership in your committee,
and move people to action. Come to this training to learn the
components of a one-on-one and get some real-life practice.

** NO ONE IS ILLEGAL | NADIE ES ILEGAL – OPEN BORDERS READING
GROUP
------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday,
January 23 | 7–9 p.m.
RSVP for address

)
As workers, we need to understand our history and join with others
to change it.
What is the history of the US border? Who benefits from
restrictions on immigration? Why is border enforcement getting more
and more violent? Why have the elite funded racist vigilantism and
even the literal murder of immigrant labor organizers?
Join us in reading No One Is Illegal by Justin Akers Chacon and
Mike Davis, hosted by the East Bay DSA Racial Solidarity Committee. At
our first meeting (Thursday, January 23) we will discuss Part 1 of the
book.
We welcome all, and will prioritize making a space that is
accessible and safe for immigrants and POC. We will have POC
facilitators who will use progressive stack and community agreements
to make sure voices that are historically marginalized can be heard.
If you don’t get all the reading done, no problem—come discuss this
book in a casual, comradely setting.
A limited number of copies in both English and Spanish are
available based on need.
Please RSVP and send any questions to
[email protected]
(mailto:[email protected]) .
We look forward to reading with you!

THE ORGANIZER'S TOOLBOX: HOW TO GIVE A GREAT POLITICAL
SPEECH
Wednesday, January 29 | 6:30–9 p.m.
Niebyl-Proctor
Marxist Library, 6501 Telegraph Ave, Oakland ♿️
In this training
for DSA organizers, we will explore our personal stories together, and
discover how they inform and support our political movement. Personal
stories are important because they allow us to identify with each
others experiences, motivate us to fight for common aims and
ultimately build solidarity.
Adapted from Marshall Ganz's "Public Narrative," this training will
challenge you to put aside the logical reasons why we need to win a
better world and rather consider the emotional & personal reasons.
We'll talk about what makes a story compelling and how stories can be
important organizing tools that bring others into our movement. Then,
we'll each develop and practice our own political speeches
together.
Note: While all are welcome, this event is geared towards
individuals who are already actively organizing with the Democratic
Socialists of America or allied groups.

Whether it’s affordable housing, or adequate mental healthcare, we
need to make that the center of any police reform agenda. In groups
like BYP 100, and the Youth Justice Coalition in Los Angeles, are
doing just that. They are saying let’s redirect resources from
policing, from courts, from prisons, into the kinds of social programs
and economic transformations that will reduce the need for coercive
state action.
