50 years ago today Roe v. Wade became the law of the land as the Supreme Court ruled that women had the right to make their own reproductive health care decisions.
But just last year, the Supreme Court undid decades of precedent by overturning this landmark decision. Since then, we've seen just how devastating this decision has been.
Immediately following the ruling, women in more than half the states in the country lost the freedom to make the most profoundly impactful health care decision of their lives – when and whether to have a child. And Republicans in state legislatures across the country have worked to pass more restrictive legislation.
To make matters worse, Republicans won back the House majority last November and have made it clear they're ready to roll back reproductive rights even further. They've already passed two anti-abortion measures and want to pass a national abortion ban.
As one of the few doctors in the House, I know that deeply personal reproductive health care decisions should be between a patient and her doctor, only. That's why I'll always fight back against these attacks on abortion care and work to ensure every woman has access to the reproductive health care she needs.
