Today marks what would have been the 50th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision on abortion, Roe v. Wade. As we continue to grapple with the impact of last year’s overturning of this historic ruling, we must acknowledge that:

the abortion access provided by Roe was never enough, and
the abortion bans triggered by the removal of Roe in 17 states and counting are dangerous, cruel, and racist.

For this reason, URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, has proudly launched our “Abortion Bans Are Racist” campaign.

Data shows that, most often, the harms from abortion restrictions fall hardest on young people and people of color. Combined with the many other discriminatory practices young people of color encounter – like restricted sex education, voter suppression, state violence, attacks on trans youth, and housing insecurity – it’s easy to see how it can be so hard for us to build toward futures where we are safe, healthy, and can thrive.

Although abortion access without Roe has been severely restricted, we know that those restrictions impact marginalized communities disproportionately. Without Roe, it is essential that we fight for what we should have had all long: abortion justice and abortion access for all.

We believe that no one should be arrested or face criminal charges or incarceration for making their own pregnancy decisions, including abortion. We must stand together against these extreme and cruel abortion bans, and racist politicians’ agenda to hurt and control our lives, bodies, and futures.
