CIJA joins the Jewish Federation of Ottawa in applauding members of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) for voting unanimously to hire a Jewish Equity Coach.

“This board sent a very strong and powerful message to the Jewish community and the entire community in Ottawa that this hate is not going to be tolerated,” said Andrea Freedman, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa

A critical development in the OCDSB's plan to combat antisemitism at schools, this vote comes in response to a letter and petition signed by 1,000 people about the urgent need to protect students and staff by quelling the persistent rise in antisemitic attitudes, discourse, and behaviour in Ottawa schools. The Jewish Equity Coach will serve as the main point of contact for students and staff facing antisemitism and, while collecting data about antisemitic or hate incidents, will educate students on antisemitism and the Holocaust.

Andrea Freedman, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, spoke with CTV News about the dangers of rising antisemitism and how CIJA’s new  online platform Unlearn It <[link removed]> can help educators and parents learn about, identify, and address antisemitism.

Funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Education, Unlearn It provides educators and parents with educational materials to frame constructive and courageous conversations using case studies based on Canadian middle school students’ real lived experiences of antisemitism and online hate.

This project was developed in partnership with the Toronto Holocaust Museum and Facing History and Ourselves.
