John -- Olivia made it clear that this is not an isolated moment. We can’t lose sight of the purpose of the fight for fair maps because opposition to fair democracy is the continuation of manipulating the maps.

Will you pitch in today to help us continue implementing our plan to protect the voting power of the people in places like Alabama?[link removed]]

Subject: This is not an isolated moment

History has shown us that fighting for the promise of a free and fair democracy does not happen in a singular moment. The civil rights movement has marched forward and advocated for change time and time again, generation after generation.. Our moment for action has come. We are at the front line advocating for this very promise. Yesterday, the moment for Black voters in Alabama was no different.

On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument in Merrill v. Milligan. This case is an ongoing challenge to Alabama's new congressional district map, which a lower court found likely violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and diluted Black voting power. The district court directed the state to draw a new congressional map that would provide Black voters with two - districts that would allow them the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice.

Alabama immediately appealed the trial court's decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 5-4 decision, the Court blocked the remedial map-drawing process ordered by the lower court. As a result, Alabama voters will have to vote under the state’s discriminatory congressional map in the 2022 election—a map that is unfair and not representative of Alabamians.

All On The Line has worked tirelessly for the past years to encourage states to make their redistricting process fair and transparent. Will you contribute to supporting our work to fight for the inclusion of communities that have been excluded in the past and need a voice in states like Alabama? >> [[link removed]]

If the Supreme Court overturns the lower court’s decision, the consequences will be immediate and severe. This could effectively remove significant protections against racial vote dilution and will set back the VRA's voting protections for communities of color across the country.

The National Redistricting Foundation, a 501(c)(3) affiliate of All On The Line, is supporting the Merrill v. Milligan case to fight for the ability of Black Alabamians to elect representatives of their choice and have their voices heard.

The right to vote and elect your representative is a founding ideal of this nation. When we allow our ideals to be diluted, we are no longer representative of our strengths but giving into our greatest weaknesses, as a nation.

This was not just a run-of-the-mill hearing on October 4. This was a moment to recommit to the fight for a free and fair democracy. When we see this egregious behavior, like Alabama in Merrill v. Milligan, we recommit ourselves to the long battle for freedom and fairness. This is democracy. We can't lose sight of this moment and how it impacts the promise of our nation’s fight toward a fair and just democracy.

The minute we stop fighting, we all lose, not just historically marginalized communities. We lose democracy as a whole. Will you chip in today to support this moment and our work to ensure we are prepared for the future? [[link removed]]
