When a candidate contributes $250,000 of their own money to their political campaign (or more), donor contribution limits for all candidates in that race are doubled from $3,100 to $6,200. Well, guess what? The millionaire clause has been triggered by a candidate entering the race for Philadelphia City Controller. This candidate went “all in” in an effort to buy the Philadelphia Democratic Committee endorsement, as well as this elected office. I’m not a millionaire. I’ve worked my way through high school, college, and two masters degrees. I’ve had to work multiple jobs in order to pay rent AND student debt with a master’s degree. I know what it’s like to have an empty bank account. I have no idea what it’s like to be able to self-fund your entire campaign. As we’ve seen over and over again, being rich does NOT make you a good leader. Lived experiences are more valuable when it comes to being a good elected official, or even a public figure. We have people like Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Matt Gaetz, and Elon Musk who have done a good job raising awareness about this issue of rich men buying their seats at the table.
