John,
Republicans have found a new standard bearer for their culture war: gas stoves.
That’s right. The GOP is trying to make the use of gas stoves in American homes the next big political battleground. This comes following a statement from Richard Trumka Jr, an official at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), saying that the agency would consider “any option” on the table to address mounting evidence that gas stoves emit harmful indoor air pollutants.
In order to score points with their radical base, Republican politicians flooded social media with claims that Big Government was coming to your house to take your gas stove. As usual, this fear-mongering was baseless and overblown – as just days later, the same CPSC official clarified that any regulations on gas stoves would only apply to new appliances.
GOP hysteria aside, however, we need to take action to combat this growing threat. Gas stoves leak significant amounts of methane when ignited and even when turned off. With each passing year, more and more research is coming out about how bad gas stoves are for our health, particularly for children.
With 47 million American households still using gas stoves, we can’t afford to sit back and do nothing while so many lives are at risk. That’s why SEEC members like Representative Don Beyer wrote a letter to the CPSC last month urging them to take action.
