January 2023

Second District Dispatch

2023 Legislative Agenda Tour

I am grateful for the opportunity to have begun the new year by touring the district and promoting my legislative focus areas for 2023.

Joined by city and county officials along the way, our stops included West Columbia, Aiken, North Augusta, and Barnwell. In each location, I spoke about the current challenges before us, reviewed some key accomplishments in 2022, and shared highlights of my goals moving forward.

Unfortunately, under the policies of Biden and Democrats, American families have suffered and jobs have been destroyed. As a result, our country has experienced unprecedented adversity.

  • Americans are struggling with inflation of consumer products and services.
  • Energy independence has been replaced by energy dependence, resulting in skyrocketing costs.
  • Our country is endangered by the ongoing invasion of illegal aliens at our Southern Border.

Biden inflation policies have increased costs, wiping out wage gains and destroying jobs. Now, after two failed years of one-party Democrat rule, House Republicans, with our new majority, are committed to fighting for an economy that’s strong, a nation that’s safe, a future that’s built on freedom, and a government that’s accountable for the American people.

Nonetheless, throughout these challenges, there were several positive and welcomed congressional actions taken in 2022 which represent valuable steps forward. Here are a few highlights of legislation I introduced or supported last year that became law:

  • Rescinded the COVID-19 vaccination mandate on all active and reserve component servicemembers.
  • Passed the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) Improvement Act to help ensure military children receive seamless educational opportunities when transferring between states.
  • Accelerated funding for the modernization of our nuclear triad by providing full funding for the missions of the Savannah River Site, including an additional $500M for the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility.
  • Reversed disastrous Biden policies that cut military readiness and modernization priorities preventing our military from being shortchanged as they balance the Global War on Terrorism and other emerging threats while modernizing critical warfighting capabilities.
  • Reauthorized authority for Department of Defense to support U.S. law enforcement to counter the flow of narcotics, human trafficking, and transnational criminal organizations including cartels.
  • Authorized $91.6M for South Carolina military construction projects at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Shaw Air Force Base, and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

Now, in reference to my 2023 Agenda (link here), the following is just a sampling of specific issues and legislation I will continue to advocate this year:

  • Promote fiscal responsibility by reducing government spending and frivolous programs.
  • Limit IRS overreach targeting families and businesses by eliminating funding for 87,000 agents.
  • Boost domestic manufacturing to help small businesses grow and create jobs.
  • Continue to advocate for current and future missions at the Savanah River Site (SRS).
  • Protect TRICARE benefits and sustain the quality of life for military families and retirees.
  • Deter economic and military threats from Putin, the Chinese Communist Party, the Iranian regime, and other aggressors.

Much remains to be done, but I am committed to the people of South Carolina’s Second District and will continue to work hard to keep us all safe, promote jobs, and help make our lives and communities stronger.
