Kennedy Institute Newsletter | WINTER 2023
FROM THE CEO, ADAM HINDS
Hello, friends –

Happy New Year from the Kennedy Institute. As we celebrated Martin Luther King Day this past Monday, I took some time to reflect on the unveiling of the “Embrace” statue on Boston Common and the role the late Dr. King played in advocating for civil rights and the opportunity for all Americans to participate in our democracy. I was delighted to see and hear Kennedy Institute board member Martin Luther King III speaking at the ceremony, and he is planning a four-day “Continuing the Dream” march in Washington D.C. in February.

Witnessing Dr. King’s legacy living on through his family is a powerful inspiration to me, and to everyone at the Kennedy Institute, to continue our commitment to invigorate civil discourse and inspire the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of our communities. The celebration of Dr. King’s life and mission evokes for me once again the unforgettable words of Senator Kennedy, “The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.’’

At the Kennedy Institute, we have kicked off 2023 by continuing to inspire the next generation of leaders through our civic education classes and our Senate Project debates. I look forward to providing additional updates as those initiatives develop. Our fundamental New Year’s resolution is to do all we can to continue to bring the United States Senate closer to common ground and consensus on solutions, especially bipartisan solutions, for the many and major problems facing all Americans.
I look forward to hearing from you all and hope 2023 will be a year of good health, happiness, and success for all of you and for the Kennedy Institute.

Sincerely,
Adam Hinds
CEO

Kennedy Institute honors Dr. Fauci, the late Bill Russell with Award for Inspired Leadership
On December 13, 2022, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate presented its annual Award for Inspired Leadership to Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Chief Medical Advisor to the President, and posthumously to the late Boston Celtics legend and civil rights icon Bill Russell.

The event, “A Celebration of Inspired Leadership,” was hosted at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute at Columbia Point, attracted more than 200 guests, and welcomed scores of leaders from Massachusetts’ government, business, medical, and philanthropic sectors.

The Kennedy Institute’s annual dinners raise support for the civic education programs, public forums, and digital exhibits that allow us to bring to life Senator Kennedy’s vision for an institute that actively encourages participatory democracy, invigorates civil discourse and inspires the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of their communities.

"Against the Wind" - Discussion with Neal Gabler
[link removed]

On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, the Kennedy Institute hosted a dynamic conversation between Senator Paul G. Kirk and acclaimed author Neal Gabler about Gabler’s newest book, AGAINST THE WIND: Edward Kennedy and the Rise of Conservatism. The conversation focused on Gabler’s journey in writing the second volume of the magisterial biography of Senator Ted Kennedy, a book that sheds new light both on one of the most revered figures of modern politics and on the origins of America’s current existential crisis.

In AGAINST THE WIND, as he did in the first book, Catching the Wind, Gabler asks incisive, timely questions about the role of morality in American politics, especially: How did the project of liberal democracy fail, and how can we resurrect it now, in this moment of profound national tension?
"GRACE: President Obama and Ten Days in the Battle for America" - Discussion with Cody Keenan

[link removed]

On Wednesday, October 26, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute was joined by board members Cody Keenan and the Honorable William “Mo” Cowan for a fascinating conversation about Keenan’s latest book, Grace: President Obama and Ten Days in the Battle for America. The book details one of the most intense periods of Obama’s presidency including the murders of nine Black worshippers in Charleston, South Carolina and Supreme Court rulings deciding the rights of Americans to healthcare and marriage equality.

In the conversation, moderated by former U.S. Senator Mo Cowan, Keenan took us through the process of finding words to console, elevate, and contextualize the events; and shined light on his unique relationship with our 44th President. Keenan talked about how the book shares an intimate glimpse into how he and President Obama co-created language to address some of the most challenging instances of recent American history, including how to address America after yet another mass shooting. Keenan also shares Obama’s innermost thoughts on race, his use that week of the one word you can’t say, and what it’s like to be edited by Obama—a relentless perfectionist–during a late-night, one-on-one writing session in the First Family’s private residence.
