John, Thirteen years ago today, the Supreme Court released its decision in Citizens United v. FEC, undermining our democracy by declaring that corporations are people with political speech rights and that they can spend unlimited money in our elections. Since then, we’ve watched corporations and the wealthiest few spend untold billions of dollars through direct contributions, super PACs, and other independent expenditures to flood elections and drown out the voices of everyday Americans. Campaign spending records are shattered year after year, with the 2022 midterm elections seeing $16.7 billion in contributions. To reclaim our democracy, we need a 28th amendment to the Constitution to end this big-money dominance of our political system. That’s why Free Speech For People is advancing the Free and Fair Elections Amendment, which would overturn Citizens United and uphold the fundamental promise of political equality for all. Sign if you agree: It’s time to end unlimited spending in our politics and ensure a democracy that works for all of us. In addition to overturning the Citizens United decision, the Free and Fair Elections Amendment would: - set limits on federal campaign contributions and spending
- prohibit corporate spending in the political process (as existed prior to Citizens United)
- require Congress to develop a system of public campaign financing for all federal candidates who qualify for the ballot; and
- allow states to set reasonable limits on campaign contributions and spending in state and local elections.
Now more than ever, we must fight for our democracy. By passing the Free and Fair Elections Amendment, we will be one step closer to a democracy that is truly by and for the people. Sign the petition: Tell Congress to pass the Free and Fair Elections Amendment. In solidarity, Free Speech For People |
