Congressional Republicans claim to care about balancing the budget, but they popped champagne after passing a ginormous set of tax breaks for the wealthy.

This might be the dumbest analogy I’ve ever heard:

Kevin McCarthy recently went on Fox News and had this to say about raising the debt ceiling: “If you gave your child a credit card and they kept hitting the limit, you wouldn’t just keep increasing it.”

A few reminders for the new House Speaker:

  • Raising the debt ceiling would not authorize a single cent of new spending.
  • It would let the U.S. pay the bills that Kevin McCarthy and Donald Trump ALREADY ran up with tax breaks for billionaires and giant corporations.
  • Kevin McCarthy himself voted to raise the debt ceiling three times under Donald Trump.

He understood then what’s still true today: if the U.S. were to default on its debt, it would crash our economy. He didn’t want that to happen while Republicans controlled the White House. But he isn’t afraid to hit working families with a wrecking ball if it could make Joe Biden look bad.

And extremist Republicans are making a stink about the debt ceiling because they want to use it as an excuse to slash Social Security and Medicare. We can’t let that happen.

Add your name if you agree: Congress must pass a clean debt ceiling increase without negotiating any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or any other programs that serve the American people.

Congressional Republicans claim to care about balancing the budget, but they popped champagne after passing a ginormous set of tax breaks for the wealthy that exploded the deficit.

They voted in lockstep against the Inflation Reduction Act, which included hundreds of billions of dollars in deficit reduction.

Just this year, the House GOP voted to only allow new spending if it’s balanced by spending cuts, without any similar requirement to offset tax cuts for the rich.

And the first bill they passed — their top priority — would increase the deficit by making it easier for wealthy people to underpay their taxes.

I’m all ears if Republicans want to raise revenues by getting the rich and powerful to pay a fair share. But the GOP would much rather impose pain on working people and even crash our whole economy.

So I’ll keep fighting to protect working families and defend Social Security and Medicare. Add your name to say you’re in this fight too: Republicans in Congress can’t exchange raising the debt ceiling for hurting the American people.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
