Friend — The Supreme Court’s extreme right-wing majority has emboldened opponents of democracy, who are passing state laws aimed at peeling back voting rights and the fundamental right of citizens to elect the leaders of their government.

The truth is that equality, voting rights, and the rule of law are still at risk. Democracy is at risk.

This spring, the Court will issue its ruling in Merrill v. Milligan, a key case that will decide the future of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Court is poised to sign off on an egregious racial gerrymander that is disenfranchising Black voters in Alabama, a blatant violation of the Voting Rights Act and a return to the discriminatory practices activists long fought against.

President Biden has picked an incredible slate of nominees — including voting rights lawyers — for lifetime federal judgeships.
But right now, the Senate is sitting on dozens of nominations for the federal judiciary. Tell your senators: confirm these pro-democracy, pro-environment judges without delay.

The Court’s decision in Merrill v. Milligan will follow other attacks on the Voting Rights Act over the last decade, including Shelby County v. Holder and Brnovich v. DNC. It will come alongside another attack on democracy in Moore v. Harper and an attack on clean water in Sackett v. EPA. Deliberately and strategically, the Court’s right-wing majority has elected to ignore the law and decades of legal precedent in order to further erode the right to an equitable democracy.

The Senate must act urgently to turn the tide in the federal courts to justice. We should not have to march today for the same basic voting rights that civil rights leaders secured decades ago.

President Biden’s slate of judicial nominees is the most diverse in our country’s history, with a greater diversity of racial, gender, and professional backgrounds than any of his predecessors. But nominations are not enough — the Senate must act to approve these incredible nominees so that they can get to work protecting our rights and our future.

The time for delay is over — the Senate must act. To protect democracy, senators must prioritize confirming lifetime judges. Take action now. Tell your senators to move quickly to confirm pro-democracy, pro-environment judges. The future of our democracy is at stake.

The power to make change lies with us, Friend. We won’t give up until we see the change this country so desperately needs.

Onward,
