Final Public Meeting to explain Brexit Deal

I am inviting constituents to a public meeting on Thursday 30 January in Bexhill to provide the latest Brexit explainer on the eve of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.

As recent votes in Parliament have demonstrated, it looks obvious that the government’s EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill will complete its passage through Parliament this month in order for the UK to leave the European Union on 31 January.

Before, and over the 3 years since the EU referendum, I held a number of public meetings at significant points of the Brexit process to provide an opportunity for my constituents to debate and share views as well as providing them with comprehensive information on the EU withdrawal process. We are now at the final stages of the exit process which will come as a relief for some and sadness for others. However, many people still have questions on what leaving the EU actually means in practice and how this will impact us in East Sussex. Whilst we are at the final stages of the exit process, we will abide by EU norms until we get a new trade and framework agreement in place. I am therefore holding one final Brexit meeting before our departure in which I will explain the EU Withdrawal Agreement, the transition period and the importance of the ongoing negotiations.

I hope that constituents will join me for this final Brexit meeting and bring any questions they may have.

The meeting will be held at 7pm on Thursday 30 January at St John’s Church, London Road, Bexhill on Sea, TN39 3JR. Seating will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Huw re-elected as BBC APPG Chairman

Happy to be back and be re-elected as Chairman for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the BBC. We discussed the importance of having a public institution such as the BBC in British society, how we could reinstate faith in its position as an unbiased news outlet and the potential alternatives to License Fees.

Flybe

Pressing for support for flybe, I asked the Aviation Minister if we could allow airlines to continue to operate whilst in administration to reduce chaos. They do so in America and many have returned to profitability.

APPG for Autism

I was pleased to chair the AGM for the cross-party Autism alliance. We are planning on reviewing challenges in the workplace; starting with Parliament and whether it can be a more autistic-friendly place to work and visit.

Busy Bees in Westminster...

...and I don't just mean the MPs! Last year with the APPG for Bees and Pollinators I asked Parliament to incorporate beehives and a green roof onto our new building design. Here they are.

Conservatives for Conservation!

It was a pleasure to attend the Conservatives for Conservation event by the Conservative Environment Network this week. We continue developing our ideas on how to support conservation and decarbonisation across the country.

New Housing

Last week, I met with residents in Ninfield concerned about proposals to build 80 homes on a single lane road. It's vital we have new homes but we really need to plan them for spaces with the infrastructure to accommodate. I have arranged for the Housing Minister to meet our local Councillors next month.
