Friend,

We kicked off our 22-county tour this week with meetings and events in Black Hawk, Chickasaw, Floyd, Cerro Gordo, and Linn Counties.

I’ll continue to meet Iowans where they are and hear from a variety of folks so that I can best advocate for our district’s diverse needs in Congress. It’s a new year, but a lot of the challenges facing our communities remain the same – Iowans are still feeling the pain of the Biden-Pelosi inflation mess that has left families struggling in this economy.

It’s past time for commonsense economic policies in Congress -- we need to stop spending to reduce inflation to make life affordable again, help bolster our skilled workforce in Iowa, and get burdensome red tape out of the way. I will continue to tell the stories of Iowans in Congress and advocate for commonsense economic policies that will keep Iowa a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

Read on for more information about my week working for Iowans!

Best,

Border Update with Rep. Tony Gonzales

For our first edition of On the Record in 2023, Representative Tony Gonzales joined us to provide an update on the Southern Border! Representative Gonzales represents over 800 miles of the Southern Border and understands the struggles border communities face every single day. We discussed ways we can secure our border as well as our joint effort to bolster mental health care resources for Border Patrol agents on the frontlines of this crisis. Watch our full conversation HERE.

Pack the Dome

On Monday, I joined the University of Northern Iowa and the Northeast Iowa Food Bank for their annual Pack the Dome event they host on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and brought Max and Jax along with me. I love that UNI and NIFB work to make this a day on, and not a day off each year in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – giving back and the importance of volunteering is something I’m working hard to instill in my boys.

Catching Up with Jeff Stein on KXEL

I enjoyed catching up with Jeff Stein this week. We covered lots of ground listen to our full interview HERE!

New Hampton Main Street Tour

Wednesday, we hit the road! We started with a Main Street tour in New Hampton. We visited Muscari coffee shop and Union Block Suites and heard directly from small business owners. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, making up 99 percent of all businesses in Iowa. Ensuring small businesses can continue to thrive in Iowa is a top priority for me in Congress – I’ll continue advocating for less government red tape, and to make small business tax cuts permanent.

Charles City Economic Development Roundtable

I hosted an economic development roundtable in Charles City and met with community leaders who are passionate about finding community-oriented solutions and promoting growth in Floyd County. Charles City is a manufacturing powerhouse in the district, and I look forward to working with local leaders to bring more opportunity to the area. From a federal perspective, that means taking on China and ensuring we’re keeping our manufacturing jobs at home, building our workforce to meet demand, and reducing inflation.

Touring North Iowa Area Community College

It was great to tour North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) and learn about the health care, STEM, and diesel mechanic programs they offer to students. Iowa is home to many incredible community colleges that help students find career pathways and equip them with the skills to find high-paying jobs in the field of their choosing following graduation. I’ve made it a priority to visit community colleges throughout the district and hear from teachers and students who have found success thanks to their community college education.

Mount Mercy University

I enjoyed touring the Nursing and SIM Lab and the new Data Intelligence Lab at Mount Mercy University and seeing their hands-on approach. Their Data Intelligence Lab was extremely impressive and will help grow data analytics programs across a variety of sectors! They are training the next generation of health care workers in Cedar Rapids – I’m grateful for everyone who is called into the health care profession to take care of others.
