New Year: Chaotic Republicans
and Democratic Priorities

It took the House Republicans 15 tries to elect the speaker who was clearly their choice from the first ballot. Then they immediately voted to tear down the IRS and abolish income tax. This is a preview of the sure to be exhausting next two years.

However, even with the House of Representatives effectively paralyzed by a majority who has no investment in legislating, Democratic politicians are still at work in the Senate and the departments of the Executive branch. Biden is coming to California this week to talk with experts on the central coast about the damage from the rainstorms.

While the Republican party will be obsessed with Hunter Biden’s by now nearly mythological laptop in an even less relevant echo of the anti-Hillary benghazi and email server hearings, Democrats are still at work. Biden managed to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and actually achieve bipartisan support. It gave $284 billion for transportation needs, which includes repairing bridges and roadways, public transit and airports, electric vehicles and low emission public transportation; $65 billion for broadband internet; $73 billion for power infrastructure; and $55 billion for clean drinking water. Democrats also passed gun control legislation, boosted domestic semiconductor production, funded climate change mitigation, capped drug costs for medicare recipients, increased corporate taxes, strengthened the IRS to target powerful tax cheats, and reformed the 1887 Electoral Count Act to close many of the theoretical loopholes that Trump’s supporters hoped to exploit to override the national election.

The Republican party, who’s last president demanded they remove support for Ukraine from the 2016 party platform and was later impeached for blackmailing President Zelensky by threatening to withhold military aid. In contrast, the Democratic administration has managed to coordinate an international response to Russia’s invasion while aiding the defense with extraordinarily deft use of intelligence work and material support.

Classified Documents, Clutter or Crime?

Conservatives love to say that “all politicians are the same.” This equivocation is in fact just an attempt to camouflage the unique awfulness of their chosen representatives.

You remember when Donald Trump’s home was raided after he refused to return classified documents that the Federal government realized he had taken when he left the presidency. Donald Trump fought against all requests and efforts to retrieve the boxes of material until the FBI was forced to storm the Mar-a-Lago compound and forcibly recover them.

Contrast that behavior with Biden’s own lawyers coming forward out of the blue to notify the government that they had found some classified documents while reviewing his Vice Presidential collection. President Biden then immediately requested that they perform an extra search of his private home where a few more classified documents were found. This is a clear difference between a mistake and a deception.

When Colin Powell kept a private Secretary of State email server, it was fine. When Hillary Clinton did the same, it was a disaster. When Joe Biden voluntarily returns some items no one knew were missing, it is the same as when Donald Trump refuses to give up government property until the cops bust down his door. This is the conservative mindset.

California Alliance for Retired Americans

CARA has been super busy organizing, advocating and engaging seniors and people with disabilities on our key issues. This past year we successfully sponsored our Senior Vote 2022 effort, where we recruited over 200 Senior Ambassadors to communicate with over 25,000 senior voters in 5 target districts, as well as sponsoring 9 Senior Vote Forums. Four of the five Congressional races we targeted successfully elected a candidate who supports our issues, and 3 of the 4 State ballot measures CARA endorsed passed.

However, we have missed seeing you in person. We are moving towards more in-person meetings and events in 2023 (hopefully) and the timing could not be better. Because in 2023, we want to celebrate CARA’s 20th anniversary! With your support, CARA can make 2023 the most successful year in our 20-year history.

CARA are kicking off our 20th Anniversary Year next week on November 29th, the national day of online giving. Make a donation to help us start 2023 in the black.

California’s Water Storage:
Floods, Fields, and Forecasts

When California’s European settlers began building dams the primary goal was preventing floods and harnessing water power. Now, our state’s increasingly unreliable rain patterns have left our network of reservoirs trying to balance flood control with stockpiling water reserves.

Law written without allowance for discretion can produce bad incomes. Such was the case for the half-century old law dictating how much reserve capacity river reservoirs must hold by each calendar date. Truely, it is important that we are not surprised by late storms dumping flood waters onto already full reservoirs, but our weather forecasts are much better now than when the old law was written. Fortunately, the new law will allow more storage, as water managers can use advanced warning to drain down lakes in the days before the storm hits, instead of sitting on unused capacity just in case.
