Volunteer Spotlight: Have a passion? Use it to Make an Impact!
Ray started playing the role of Santa when he grew out his beard and was jokingly told he’d make a great Santa by our staff. His wife “volun-told” him to do it, and it’s become a passion of his since. Now, in addition to the yearly visits to our Healthy Families holiday party, Santa (Ray) works as a professional Santa at shopping malls.
This is one of the many examples of the creative ways our supporters engage with NVFS. “We have our volunteer page <[link removed]> with our regular needs, but we are always open to talking to supporters about their ideas and creating an experience that’s impactful for our clients, meaningful for our supporters, and fun for everyone” explained Navara Cannon, Community and Volunteer Engagement Manager.
The array of creative engagements that NVFS has received over the years highlights the diversity of our supporters. Companies have helped guests at our family shelter celebrate the holidays by hosting trunk-or-treats or putting up holiday lights. We’ve had groups help with maintenance from building sheds to power-washing or even cleaning our food recovery vans. A popular activity for groups, individuals, and community-conscious youth are creating spring baskets, activity kits, birthday bags, and holiday stockings for the kids at our shelter and program.
One of Navara’s most vivid community support memories was of a child-led food drive. “This five-year-old boy asked all his friends to bring food to his birthday party instead of gifts. He dropped off this huge SUV filled with food. I told him that what he did was special because he brought food he liked to eat – there were lots of Spiderman Spaghetti O’s – and and if he like to eat it, the kids he was helping would probably like it too.”
