John,
The Trump administration is trying to kick hundreds of thousands of disabled Americans off of Social Security. And reports are that if they’re successful with this round of harmful cuts, they’re coming back for more.
The administration claims that the proposed purge of SSDI and beneficiaries will save Social Security $2.6 billion, by paying out fewer benefits. But it will also cost the Social Security Administration $1.8 billion to perform 2.6 million additional eligibility reviews—resulting in hundreds of thousands of already-approved beneficiaries losing their life-saving Social Security benefits.
Just look at this New York Times op-ed headline:1
Social Security Works is organizing our allies across the country to submit official comments opposing this Trump administration rule change. We’ve already submitted over 47,000 comments.

Let’s be clear. By adding burdensome reviews to 2.6 million beneficiaries, the administration’s intent is to demotivate and demoralize people from getting the disability benefits they’ve earned.
In the 1980s, this is what President Reagan did, even kicking a Vietnam War hero off of SSDI who had war injuries including shrapnel in his heart, who Reagan himself had awarded the Medal of Honor.2
These are benefits that we’ve earned with every paycheck. And the Trump administration’s blatant ideologically motivated purge of disability beneficiaries is cruel and will cause real harm to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Americans.
