Good afternoon,
January 22 would have marked the 50th anniversary of the original passing of Roe v. Wade, the now overturned landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that made abortion a constitutionally protected right in the United States.
For nearly 50 years, the right to abortion was recognized and protected under the 14th Amendment's right to liberty. On June 24, 2022, those rights disappeared when the Court overturned Roe, in the decision of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case, eliminating—for the first time ever—a fundamental constitutional right.
Join us next week for two different events to hear from Center for Reproductive Rights attorneys as they discuss this watershed moment and the future of reproductive rights after Roe.
In Conversation with Reproductive Rights Attorneys on Roe's 50th Anniversary
When: Monday, January 23 from 5-6:15 pm ET
Details: This conversation-style event will feature Center attorneys Jenny Ma and Hillary Schneller, counsel in the Dobbs case. This webinar, hosted by the New York Chapter of the American Constitution Society, is free and open to the public; pre-registration is required.
Reproductive Rights on the 50th Anniversary of Roe
When: Thursday, January 26 from 1-3 pm ET
Details: 50 years after Roe, the future of abortion access is as unclear as it was in 1973. Hillary Schneller will join The 19th, an independent, nonprofit newsroom reporting on gender, politics and policy, for a conversation about what we can expect to see next in the courts. The 19th will mark January's consequential milestone with high-level conversations on the legal, historical and cultural impact of Roe, and what the future holds without it. This virtual event is free and open to the public.
