Legislative Update

Friends and Neighbors,

It has been a somber week here at the capitol as we?ve had a front-row seat to the most extreme abortion bill in the country passing across our desks. The Democrat?s House File 1 puts Minnesota in line with human rights abusers such as communist China and North Korea. I have been absolutely shocked by their commitment to defend this position. Every time we offered amendments to add guide rails to this bill they were steamrolled by the majority.

Some of the amendments we offered included requiring 2nd and 3rd trimester abortions to be performed in a hospital. Next was an amendment to ban just 3rd trimester abortions and they couldn?t even be bothered to take that change. Finally, an amendment to prohibit the abhorrent practice of partial-birth abortion, and again the democrats defended their position that this should be allowable. These amendments were nowhere near my beliefs on abortion, they concede so much ground to the left, yet they could not add any amount of humanity to their legislation.? During the testimony and debate on these amendments we heard some of the truly gruesome procedures they use to carry out abortions. Things that make my stomach churn with complete disregard for life and the pain they are causing to a poor helpless child.

While this week has weighed heavy on me, I know that we all will continue to fight for life in Minnesota. I am not one to accept defeat though.? My fellow Republicans and I are already brainstorming legislation we can introduce to add support for mothers in crisis. There are so many better options for woman such as adoption and we should make them more easily accessible.

The March for Life is this weekend and will be a somber time as we mourn for the lives that will be lost because of this legislation. It will also be a time that we remember we must not give up the fight. It is unfortunate that House Democrats felt the need to rush HF 1 so that they could pass it just days before this annual event that means so much to the Pro-Life movement. This just shows that however much they say they are accepting of everyone they truly have no regard for the feelings and beliefs of others. I will continue to pray for the lives of the unborn and for the state of Minnesota as we contemplate this dark point in our history.
