The End of Title 42 Exemptions

With the current changes regarding Title 42 and asylum policy at the border, we want to share our gratitude to everyone involved in the exemption process. We want to give a special thanks to Psicologos Sin Fronteras, B.C., and our supported shelter network for their assistance in identifying, assisting and presenting individuals at the border through Title 42 exemptions. This past Wednesday, January 19th we presented the last of the individuals we will be able to assist.

Through this collaboration, we were able to safely present thousands of asylum seekers at the port of entry, in the hopes of reducing harm, scams, or danger they might face, and presenting their asylum cases safely. All people who were presented came from within our shelter network and had been waiting in Tijuana sometimes up to around 2 years.

Now that we will no longer be able to assist with Title 42 exemptions, appointments for asylum seekers will have to be scheduled through the CBP One app, more info can be found below.

CBP One Information

As mentioned, we will no longer be helping present asylum seekers at the border through Title 42 exemptions. Department of Homeland Security announced that migrants located in central or northern Mexico who are hoping to enter the country through U.S. ports of entry can now schedule appointments through Customs and Border Protection’s CBP One mobile application.

To get more information on how to use and schedule appointments through the CBP One app. The app is currently available in English and Spanish.

Venezuelans describe dangers and desperation amid U.S. asylum changes

Mariantonela Orellana spent nine days in the dangerous Darien Gap jungle in the Colombia-Panama border, and she described her nightmarish ordeal.

She crossed four rivers and nearly drowned; had a nervous breakdown, she said, because for hours she couldn't find one of her children; saw corpses of other migrants rotting on the trails; and as if that weren't enough, had to scare away some jaguars that began to stalk their makeshift camp in the thick jungle.

"You have to mentally prepare yourself and really want to forge ahead, because it’s very difficult to continue," said Orellana, 35, who left the economic and political turmoil of her home country, Venezuela, in 2019. She first lived in Ecuador before embarking north toward the U.S.

"I'm here because of my daughters who told me, 'Mom, you have to continue.' That was what motivated me, but we went through hell, and we still haven’t arrived."

Central American Migrants Upset US Immigration Program Excludes Them
In early January the United States put in place a new humanitarian parole process which allows some Cuban, Haitian and Nicaraguan migrants to live and work temporarily in the U.S. and expands the number of Venezuelans eligible. Some Central American migrants argue they should also qualify for the same humanitarian relief. Victor Hugo Castillo reports from Reynosa, Mexico.
